Spring Scores: Iwakuma looks sharp for Mariners

Hisashi Iwakuma pitched three scoreless innings to help the Seattle Mariners to a 5-4 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Friday in an exhibition game in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Leonys Martin, Stefen Romero and Franklin Gutierrez each had an RBI for the Mariners and Hunter Pence hit a two-run homer in his first spring game for the Giants.

Rangers 8, Brewers 5

Joey Gallo hit a three-run homer in the second inning and Delino DeShields had a two-run triple in a five-run sixth and two hits to raise his spring average to .411 as Texas beat Milwaukee in Phoenix. Domingo Santana homered and had three hits and Michael Reed also homered for the Brewers.

Phillies 9, Braves 2

Ryan Howard hit a two-run double in the first inning and Philadelphia battered former Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick for seven runs in less than two innings in a win over an Atlanta split squad in Kissimmee, Fla. Cesar Hernandez and Darin Ruf each contributed two RBI for the Phillies.

Nationals 9, Mets 5

VIERA, Fla. — Washington survived a rocky ninth by closer Jonathan Papelbon to beat New York. Papelbon gave up four runs in two-thirds of an inning before leaving.

Cubs 7, Reds 4

Anthony Rizzo had two doubles, a walk and two runs for Chicago against a Cincinnati split squad in Mesa, Ariz. Miguel Montero, Dan Vogelbach and Tim Federowicz homered for the Cubs and John Lackey made his first start of spring training, allowing three runs and five hits in three innings.

White Sox 8, Padres 3

Leury Garcia, Jimmy Rollins and Jose Abreu hit third-inning home runs to power Chicago over San Diego in Peoria, Ariz. Courtney Hawkins also homered for the White Sox and Dioner Navarro had a two-run double in a three-run fourth.

Rockies 6, Indians 1

Colorado got seven shutout innings from four pitchers, including three from Chad Bettis, against Cleveland in Scottsdale, Ariz. Tom Murphy hit a two-run homer for the Rockies.

Marlins 6, Twins 5

Byung Ho Park homered for the third time this spring and Jarred Cosart pitched two scoreless innings for Miami against Minnesota in Fort Myers, Fla. Miguel Sano added a single, a run-scoring double and a walk for the Twins.

Yankees 7, Orioles 1

Masahiro Tanaka made his second start this spring, giving up one hit in three shutout innings for New York against Baltimore in Tampa, Fla.

Astros 10, Tigers 4

Colby Rasmus hit a three-run homer in the first inning to power Houston over Detroit in Kissimmee, Fla. Steven Moya hit his third home run of the spring for the Tigers.

Pirates 4, Rays 3

Andrew McCutchen homered leading off the fourth inning and Pittsburgh beat Tampa Bay in Bradenton, Fla. The Pirates’ three-run rally in the eighth was capped by Gift Ngoepe’s two-out, RBI single.

Cardinals 4, Braves 3

Carlos Martinez gave up one run in two innings in his first start this spring and Yadier Molina caught five innings in his return from a thumb injury for St. Louis against an Atlanta split squad in Jupiter, Fla. Pinch-hitter Reid Brignac belted a two-run homer for the Braves.

Blue Jays 2, Red Sox 1, 10 innings

Marcus Stroman gave up three hits in 4 2/3 innings and Toronto went on to beat Boston in 10 innings on a single by Jon Berti in Dunedin, Fla. Sam Travis homered in the ninth for Boston to tie the score.

Diamondbacks 12, Royals 3

Patrick Corbin threw three scoreless innings and Arizona got home runs from Chris Herrmann, Nick Ahmed and Evan Marzilli in the first three innings against Kansas City in Surprise, Ariz. Reymond Fuentes hit a three-run homer in the eighth for the Royals.

Athletics 9, Reds 4

Sam Fuld had a three-run homer and an RBI triple to lead Oakland past a Cincinnati split squad in Goodyear, Ariz. Jay Bruce had an RBI single in a three-run fourth, Joey Votto singled to reach base for the 10th time in 19 plate appearances, Juan Duran hit his second homer of the spring and Zack Cozart singled in his return from June knee surgery for the Reds.

Angels 8, Dodgers 4

Geovany Soto hit a three-run homer in the first inning to power the Angels’ win over the Dodgers in Glendale, Ariz. Austin Barnes homered in the second for the Dodgers.
