The St. Louis Cardinals placed right-hander Adam Wainwright on the 10-day injured list Monday due to a strained left hamstring.
Wainwright, 37, suffered the injury while hitting a double during Sunday night’s game against the Chicago Cubs.
Right-hander Ryan Helsley was recalled from Triple-A Memphis to fill the roster opening.
Wainwright said he felt the hamstring lock up just a few steps into running after hitting the ball in the top of the fifth inning. He left during the bottom of the fifth.
Wainwright is 5-6 with a 4.46 ERA in 13 starts this season. He became the sixth player in franchise history to surpass 2,000 innings pitched. His total stands at 2,002 2/3.
Helsley is back with the Cardinals after being optioned to Memphis on Sunday. The 24-year-old rookie has a 2.70 ERA with 11 strikeouts in 10 innings in six relief appearances.
