St. Louis reliever Carlos Martinez underwent a “small procedure” on his right shoulder, Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said Sunday.

Mozeliak, speaking to KMOX/1120 AM and StlToday.com, said the procedure was to address Martinez’s right-shoulder discomfort. The pitcher, who’s expected to be ready for spring training, also received a platelet-rich plasma injection.

Martínez, 28, began experiencing shoulder issues in 2018, when he was moved from the rotation to the bullpen following a stint on the injured list. He spent this past season pitching in relief, posting a 4-2 record and 3.17 ERA with 24 saves in 27 opportunities.

Martinez has expressed the desire to start again, and the team has said the pitcher will be allowed to compete for a rotation spot next season.
