Veteran Cardinals right-hander Adam Wainwright signed a one-year contract extension to return to the team for a 17th season in 2022, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Friday.
Terms of the contract weren’t disclosed.
The news comes a day after the Cardinals announced Wainwright will get the start in the National League wild-card game on Wednesday. The Cardinals’ opponent has yet to be determined but will be either the San Francisco Giants or Los Angeles Dodgers.
Wainwright, 40, has pitched his final game of the regular season. He heads into the postseason with a 17-7 mark and a 3.05 ERA in 32 starts. He won six straight decisions and 10 of his past 11 and totaled 206 1/3 innings on the season.
Wainwright has pitched in the majors only for the Cardinals, and he was part of the team that won the World Series in 2006. In 28 career postseason games (15 starts), he has a 4-5 record and 2.89 ERA.
A three-time All-Star, Wainwright has a career record of 184-105 with an ERA of 3.35. He’s appeared in 425 games (358 starts) and thrown 2,375 2/3 innings. His 27 complete games are the most among active pitchers.
Last month, the Cardinals signed Wainwright’s longtime catcher, Yadier Molina, to a one-year. $10 million extension to return in 2022. The 39-year-old is in his 18th season.
