St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina became the first player to catch 2,000 games for one team when he was behind the plate for the team’s 6-0 loss to the Washington Nationals on Wednesday.
Molina is the sixth catcher overall to reach the 2,000-game milestone.
Molina received an ovation after catching the first pitch from Adam Wainwright. He said it was fitting that Wainwright, his teammate since 2005, tossed the pitch.
“Very, very special for me to have my brother there for me on the mound for this game,” Molina said afterward of Wainwright.
The 38-year-old Molina, who went 1-for-4 on Wednesday, is his 18th season with the Cardinals. He is a nine-time Gold Glove winner.
The other players to catch at least 2,000 games are Ivan Rodriguez (2,427), Carlton Fisk (2,226), Bob Boone (2,225), Gary Carter (2,056) and Jason Kendall (2,025). Rodriguez, Fisk and Carter are Hall of Famers.
