The Texas Rangers signed first baseman Greg Bird to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training on Tuesday.

Bird started Opening Day for the New York Yankees last season but played in only 10 regular-season games after sustaining a plantar fascia tear.

When he played in 2019, Bird hit just .171 with one homer and one RBI. He was designated for assignment in November but opted for free agency.

Bird, 27, played 186 games for the Yankees from 2015-19, batting .211 with 32 homers and 98 RBIs. He missed all of 2016 with a shoulder injury and underwent ankle surgeries that limited him in 2017 and 2018.

A left-handed batter, he was a fifth-round pick by the Yankees in 2011.
