George Springer’s Toronto Blue Jays debut will be delayed even further with the outfielder undergoing an MRI on a quad injury, multiple outlets reported Wednesday.
Results of the scan were pending for Springer, who signed a six-year, $150 million deal with the Blue Jays in the offseason.
The three-time All-Star was not available at the start of the season because of an oblique strain that occurred during spring training. His quad injury surfaced while running the bases in preparation for his return from the original injury.
Springer, 31, batted .265 with 14 home runs and 32 RBIs in 51 regular-season games for the Houston Astros during the abbreviated 2020 season. He followed that by batting .263 with four home runs and 10 RBIs in 13 games of the 2020 postseason, as they ended up a victory shy of a World Series appearance.
In seven seasons, all with the Astros, Springer is a career .270 hitter with 174 home runs and 458 RBIs, finishing as high as seventh in American League MVP voting in 2019.
