The Arizona Cardinals released Robert Alford after the injury prone cornerback didn’t play in a single game during the first two seasons of a three-year, $22.5 million deal.
The Cardinals created $7.5 million in salary cap space with the move.
Alford, 32, signed with Arizona in 2019 but sat out the ensuing campaign after breaking his leg. He was recovered and in position to start last season before tearing a pectoral in mid-August and again missing the season.
Alford spent his first six seasons with the Atlanta Falcons and had 303 tackles and 10 interceptions (two returned for touchdowns) in 88 games (76 starts).
The move comes at a time in which eight-time Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Peterson is about to become an unrestricted free agent. Peterson has said he is open to a return to Arizona but does plan to test the market.
