Former Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio was named the new head coach of the Denver Broncos. Fangio becomes the 17th coach in the franchise’s history.

“Vic really impressed us with his attention to detail — His focus is on teaching the fundamentals, technique and playing disciplined football,” President of Football Operations/General Manager John Elway said. “Going through this process and talking to many qualified candidates, it became clear that Vic was the best choice to lead our team.

“There are few things that Vic has not seen in 40 years of coaching. He’s been great on the defensive side of the ball for a number of years with a simple, detailed approach that gets results. With his intelligence and experience, Vic is as good of a football coach as you can find. He’s the perfect fit and exactly what we need as head coach of the Denver Broncos.”

Fangio oversaw a defensive unit that led the league in rush defense (80 ypg.) and fewest points allowed (17.7 ppg.). Chicago ranked third in the NFL in total D (299.7 ypg.), seventh against the pass (219.7 ypg.) and third in sacks (50).

“I want to thank Vic for his last four seasons as our defensive coordinator and wish him the best as head coach of the Denver Broncos,” Bears general manager Ryan Pace said in a statement.

“Vic was a key leader in bringing great defense back to Chicago. We will continue to build upon the foundation he helped establish. Under the leadership of head coach Matt Nagy and the rest of his coaching staff, we are confident in the development and improvement of a talented defensive unit.”

Fangio has spent 32 years in the NFL as an assistant. He’s been the defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers (1995-98), Indianapolis Colts (1999-2001), Houston Texans (2002-05), San Francisco 49ers (2011-14) and the Bears (2015-18).

Fangio will make the defensive calls for the Broncos this upcoming season.
