Pro Football Hall of Famer Kurt Warner has heard instant comparisons between himself and top overall pick Joe Burrow, and he seems to be on board.

“I actually had seen that a couple times out there — people making that comparison,” Warner, 48, told Arizona Sports’ Doug & Wolf. “And I kind of like it, based on what I’ve seen. If you go back and look at what they did at LSU, 80 percent of the time, they went five out. Five-man protection, get everybody out, put it in the quarterback’s hands, deal the football.

“The accuracy part of it, the ability to make the throw down the field. But where he thrived was quick decisions, accuracy and decision-making. And that, to me, is exactly how I played the game.”

While Warner was not drafted upon entering the league, Burrow is set to begin his NFL career with the Cincinnati Bengals amid plenty of hype.

Burrow, who grew up in southeastern Ohio, led LSU to the national championship and won the Heisman Trophy in 2019. He completed 76.3 percent of his passes for 5,671 yards and an FBS-record 60 touchdowns. Only six of his 527 passes were intercepted.

Burrow will be charged with turning around a Cincinnati team that went 2-14 in 2019. The Bengals haven’t won a playoff game since 1990.

Warner finished his NFL career as a two-time league MVP and four-time Pro Bowl selection. He played 12 NFL seasons with the then-St. Louis Rams, New York Giants and Arizona Cardinals, making three Super Bowl appearances and winning one (SB XXXIV).
