Urban Meyer has begun assembling a staff in case he takes the head coaching job with the Jacksonville Jaguars, whom he interviewed with on Friday night, according to ESPN.
Meyer met with Jaguars owner Shad Khan on the owner’s boat on Friday, and the two reportedly have been in frequent communication recently.
Meyer, 56, reportedly is seeking $12 million per year to come out of retirement. A decision is expected in the next week, according to ESPN.
The coach owns a 187-32 career record and won three national championships in 17 seasons with Bowling Green, Utah, Florida and Ohio State. Two of those titles came down the road from Jacksonville in Gainesville, Fla., with the Gators. He grabbed a third title at Ohio State, where he was 83-9 in seven seasons.
The Jaguars fired Doug Marrone after four-plus seasons a day after the 2020 season ended. He posted a 23-43 regular-season record in Jacksonville.
Jacksonville has some attractive assets for a new coach, but no general manager is in place, meaning Meyer could be offered total control of the front office.
The Jaguars own the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and are projected to about $75 million under the salary cap.
