Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes returned to a limited practice session on Wednesday, just six days after dislocating his right kneecap against the Denver Broncos.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said before practice Mahomes would “do a few things,” including throwing and going through individual drills.

During the portion open to the media, Mahomes went through stretches, and then moved a little gingerly while throwing and delivering handoffs, generally working as the fourth quarterback in the rotation.

Reid has yet to rule out the possibility of the reigning NFL MVP returning for Sunday night’s home game against the Green Bay Packers (6-1), though backup Matt Moore is still expected to start.

“We evaluate him everyday that he’s out there,” Reid said of Mahomes. “In the meantime, Matt (Moore) will take the reps with Patrick.”

Mahomes has completed 157 of 241 passes for 2,180 yards with 15 touchdowns and one interception in seven games this season with the Chiefs (5-2). His passing yardage total leads the NFL while his touchdown passes are tied with Seattle’s Russell Wilson and Atlanta’s Matt Ryan.

Also returning to practice Wednesday was quarterback Chad Henne, who has been on injured reserve with a broken ankle sustained in the preseason. Henne, who was set to be Mahomes’ backup before getting hurt, has officially been designated to return from IR and is eligible to play beginning in Week 9.

The team also signed Kyle Shurmur off the practice squad this week as a possible backup to Moore on Sunday night.
