Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes is on track to return from toe surgery in time to participate in the Chiefs’ minicamp in June, general manager Brett Veach said Monday.
Mahomes, 25, underwent surgery for turf toe on Feb. 10.
“It’s a three-month recovery, so we’re hopeful (he returns) somewhere around that mandatory minicamp, if we have it,” Veach said. “We certainly think by training camp he’ll be ready to go and we’ll be smart with him.”
Mahomes injured his left big toe in the first quarter of Kansas City’s 22-17 divisional playoff victory against the Cleveland Browns on Jan. 17.
He had one of the worst games of his NFL career in the 31-9 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV, completing 26 of 49 passes for 270 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. He rushed five times for 33 yards and was sacked three times.
Also Monday, Veach said the Chiefs are hopeful starting tackles Mitchell Schwartz (back) and Eric Fischer (Achilles tendon) will be ready for training camp following offseason surgeries.
“I would probably say Pat’s ahead of them just because of that type of injury and a quicker recovery,” Veach said. “Hopefully we’ll have all three ready to go by training camp.”
Mahomes is 38-8 as a starter for the Chiefs, earning three Pro Bowl selections and the 2018 MVP award since he was drafted in the first round (10th overall) in 2017.
