The Miami Dolphins officially released Kyle Van Noy Wednesday after attempts to trade the linebacker failed.
The move will save the team $9.75 million in cap space.
Van Noy, who turns 30 on March 26, was one year into a four-year, $51 million deal he signed with Miami in March 2020. The Dolphins will incur a $4.125 million dead cap hit this season. His 2021 salary, which was to be $12.5 million, was guaranteed for injury only, ESPN reported.
Van Noy registered 69 tackles in 14 games (13 starts) last season with six sacks and 10 quarterback hits. He had two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
Van Noy notched 16.5 sacks in three-plus seasons with the New England Patriots after two-plus seasons with the Detroit Lions, who selected him in the second round (No. 40 overall) in the 2014 draft. Van Noy won Super Bowl titles with the Patriots in the 2016 and 2018 seasons.
