A published story by ESPN claiming that the Miami Dolphins are parting ways with offensive coordinator Chan Gailey isn’t accurate, the network said Monday.
ESPN said it regrets the error.
“ESPN published an incorrect story on Monday involving Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Chan Gailey,” ESPN said on its website. “The story has been removed from ESPN.com, and replaced with this correction. The story was also mentioned on the 1 p.m. ET edition of SportsCenter.
“No ESPN reporters reported on Gailey or the Dolphins, or were involved in the error, which was made internally.”
ESPN’s original story began this way: “The Miami Dolphins have parted ways with offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.”
The story began circulating and other news’ entities soon picked it up. ESPN recanted the story about an hour after its first report.
The Dolphins have not commented on the situation.
Gailey just completed his first season as Miami’s offensive coordinator. The Dolphins (10-6) missed the playoffs after being blown out 56-26 by the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.
The Dolphins ranked 15th in scoring offense at 25.3 points and 22nd in total offense at 339.0 yards per game in 2020.
The 68-year-old Gailey has been head coach of the Dallas Cowboys (1998-99) and Buffalo Bills (2010-12). One of his college head-coaching gigs was at Georgia Tech (2002-07).
