The Miami Dolphins are parting ways with offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, ESPN reported on Monday.
That would make the 2020 season Gailey’s only year running the Dolphins’ offense. The move comes one day after the Dolphins (9-7) missed the playoffs after being blown out 56-26 by the Buffalo Bills.
The Dolphins ranked 15th in scoring offense at 25.3 points and 22nd in total offense at 339 yards per game.
Veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was the starter for the first seven games of the season before rookie Tua Tagovailoa replaced him.
Tagovailoa passed for 1,814 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. Three of the picks came in the loss against the Bills.
Fitzpatrick came off the bench to rally the Dolphins to a 26-25 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 16. But he was unavailable for the finale after testing positive for COVID-19.
Fitzpatrick passed for 2,091 yards and 13 touchdowns against eight interceptions. The 38-year-old completed a career-high 68.5 percent of his passes.
Second-year Dolphins coach Brian Flores also fired his offensive coordinator (Chad O’Shea) after his first season.
The 68-year-old Gailey has been head coach of the Dallas Cowboys (1998-99) and Buffalo Bills (2010-12). One of his college head-coaching gigs was at Georgia Tech (2002-07).
