New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton remains asymptomatic in his bout with COVID-19, his father said Sunday.
In an interview with WTVD-TV in North Carolina, Cecil Newton Sr. said his son had been maintaining social distances and that the positive result “came out of nowhere.”
“I was asking him about his immune system and how he felt and whether the symptoms were fever, chills, headaches, coughs, that kind of stuff,” the elder Newton said. “He had none of the symptoms, so I think he’ll be able to combat his way through it.”
The quarterback’s positive test sidelined him for the Patriots’ game last Monday against the Kansas City Chiefs, and it’s unclear when he’ll return. Fox Sports reported Sunday that Newton had another positive test late in the week and hasn’t had two negative tests at least 24 hours apart. He can’t return to the team until he does.
With a third positive test in the organization confirmed Saturday, the NFL postponed the Patriots’ Week 5 game against the Denver Broncos. Originally set for Sunday afternoon, it was moved to Monday night before being postponed.
The league announced the game now will be played Oct. 18.
Newton, 31, played in the Patriots’ first three games of 2020, his first in New England. He’s completed 68.1 percent of his passes for 714 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He’s also run for 149 yards and four touchdowns.
