Drew Brees joined the NBC Sports team Monday, one day after retiring from the New Orleans Saints.

The 42-year-old quarterback announced on the “Today” show that he will work both as an NFL analyst on “Football Night in America” and as a game analyst for Notre Dame football broadcasts.

“I’m excited to stay very closely connected with the game of football,” Brees said. “It’s been such an important part of my life, and I continue to be able to talk about it and show passion for it, and bring my kids along for the ride as well and let them be part of some of those special moments.”

Brees said he also plans to remain involved in philanthropic work in New Orleans, where he played the last 15 seasons of his prolific 20-year career.

He is the NFL’s all-time leader with 80,358 career passing yards and 7,142 completions. His 571 touchdowns rank second to Tom Brady’s 581.

A 13-time Pro Bowl selection, Brees led New Orleans to its lone Super Bowl championship following the 2009 season. He also became revered in the city for his leadership after Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans in 2005.
