While New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley continues to make progress from a high ankle sprain, he was ruled out of Sunday’s game against the visiting Minnesota Vikings.

Barkley originally was expected to miss four to eight weeks after he injured the right ankle and hobbled off in New York’s 32-31 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 22. He will now aim to return for Thursday night’s matchup at New England.

Also ruled out for the Giants on Sunday are linebacker Alec Ogletree (hamstring) and linebacker Tae Davis (concussion).

Barkley, who was the 2018 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, missed a game for the first time in his career on Sunday when New York breezed to a 24-3 win over the Washington Redskins.

“He’ll be doing a little bit more each day,” coach Pat Shurmur said Thursday. “We’ll just bring him back as quickly and as smartly as possible.”

Barkley has rushed 37 times for 237 yards (6.4-yard average) with one touchdown and added 11 catches for 74 yards in three games for the Giants (2-2) this season.
