The New York Jets reportedly reached an agreement with quarterback Joe Flacco on a one-year contract.
Flacco’s representation, JL Sports, initially reported the news over social media on Friday. ESPN’s Adam Schefter announced that the contract was worth $1.5 million, although it can increase to $4.5 million if the former Super Bowl MVP reaches incentives.
The move will reunite Flacco with Jets general manager Joe Douglas, who was a scout with the Baltimore Ravens when the team selected the now-35-year-old quarterback with the 18th overall pick of the 2008 NFL Draft.
Flacco is not expected to be medically cleared until at least late August after undergoing neck surgery, NFL Network reported earlier this month.
Flacco likely will back up Sam Darnold, who was the third overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft. Fellow quarterbacks David Fales and rookie James Morgan — a fourth-round pick — are also on the roster.
Flacco played eight games with the Denver Broncos in 2019 but was released with a failed physical designation. He was placed on injured reserve due to a herniated cervical disc in his neck.
Flacco went 2-6 as a starter for Denver, passing for 1,822 yards with six touchdowns and five interceptions.
He has thrown for 40,067 yards with 218 touchdowns and 141 interceptions in 171 career games with the Ravens and Broncos. He flourished during the 2012 postseason, throwing 11 touchdown passes without an interception over four games as Baltimore went on to win Super Bowl XLVII.
