The Philadelphia Eagles released veteran linebacker Zach Brown on Monday, but it’s uncertain whether it was because of his play or his disparaging remarks about Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins.
Cousins and the Vikings’ offense burned the Eagles’ defense on Sunday, racking up 447 total yards in a 38-20 victory. It’s possible Brown was partly responsible for riling up the Vikings after he slammed them on Friday.
“I think every defense is going to want that guy to throw the ball,” Brown said of Cousins. “For me, that’s probably the weakest part of their offense is him. Everything else is good. They’ve got a good running game, probably one of the best in the league. They have real good receivers. You just want them to pass the ball. You want Kirk Cousins to get it in his hands.”
Cousins, who has been inconsistent during the season, completed 22 of 29 passes for 333 yards and four touchdowns with one interception.
Asked after the game about the opposing QB’s performance, Brown said, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer, “I’m here to talk about the game. Any other questions, besides about Kirk Cousins? He did a great job today. He played good, you know? Hats off to him.”
Brown, 29, was released by the Washington Redskins in March, then signed a one-year deal with Philadelphia. This season, he had 31 combined tackles with two tackles for loss and two passes defensed in six games, including five total tackles against the Vikings.
Brown previously played for the Tennessee Titans (2012-15), the Buffalo Bills (2016) and the Redskins (2017-18). He has appeared in 100 NFL games and started 80.
