When Trent Williams takes the field with his new team, he’ll do so with a restructured contract.
The offensive tackle and the San Francisco 49ers reworked the final year of his contract, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Thursday. According to Rapoport, Williams will get more money upfront money this season, a particularly good thing for Williams considering he did not get paid any money last season.
The 49ers acquired Williams from the Washington Redskins in April in exchange for a 2020 fifth-round pick and a 2021 third-round pick. Williams, who was drafted fourth overall by Washington in 2010, missed all of last season over a dispute with the team, citing mistrust of the medical staff and a desire for a redone contract.
At the time of the trade, Williams said he was comfortable playing out the final year of his contract with the 49ers. He was due $12.5 million for the 2020 season, and according to Rapoport, will still make similar money despite the restructuring.
Williams, who turns 32 in July, last played in a game on Dec. 30, 2018. He made seven consecutive Pro Bowls before sitting out last season.
The nine-year veteran will take over for Joe Staley, who retired this offseason, at left tackle in the 49ers’ offense.
