San Francisco Giants right-hander Jeff Samardzija was set to make what could be his final start with the club after he was activated from the injured list to pitch in the second game of Friday night’s doubleheader against the San Diego Padres.

The veteran, whose contract expires at the end of the season, has been out since Aug. 7 with a shoulder impingement. He has made just three starts this season and is 0-2 with a 9.88 ERA.

The Giants were 28-28 at the start of play Friday and clinging to the final playoff spot in the National League. Even if the Giants did advance, Samardzija might not make a start in the postseason, even if he is on the active roster.

The 35-year-old has a career 80-106 record with a 4.14 ERA over 13 seasons with the Chicago Cubs, Oakland Athletics, Chicago White Sox and Giants. He converted from a reliever to a starter in 2012 with the Cubs.
