Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf showed his attempt to qualify for next month’s U.S. Olympic Trials was no joke, but it still wasn’t good enough.
At the USA Track and Field Golden Games and Distance Open on Sunday, Metcalf finished in 10.37 seconds in the 100 meters in his semifinal heat. The time was the slowest of the nine-man race but better than two of the 17 overall runners in the event at Walnut, Calif.
Metcalf gained viral fame after he chased down Arizona Cardinals safety Budda Baker last October in a nationally televised NFL game.
He had run 4.33 at the 2019 NFL Combine in the 40-yard dash.
John Ross holds the combine record at 4.22.
To automatically qualify for the Olympic Trials, Metcalf would have needed a 10.05 or faster with a legal tailwind of no more than two meters per second. The qualifying group of 32 for the Trials include those who meet that standard along with the next fastest men who failed to surpass the automatic qualifying mark.
In 2019, it took a qualifying time of 10.26 seconds.
